Grenada OVERVIEW
No sooner had the Hurricane Ivan ripped the island paradise of Grenada in 2004 than the cruise liners struggled to fill ships with numbers they had gotten used to. And although life goes on and Grenada is a living proof that even the most horrid calamity cannot prevent a nation from pulling itself back together, a lot of people will open their eyes wider at your idea of Grenada vacation, or at least will diplomatically shrug it off but think "No, thank you".
Meanwhile, you will come back with kaleidoscopic photographs of fragrant spice trees, stunning beaches, rare tropical flowers, cascading rivers and waterfalls, lush rainforests, sulfur springs and brilliant Lake Antoine. The seven islands that form the nation smell of nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and cocoa, overflow with vibrant cultural heritage (local festivals and fairs are big-time events), and extend a warm welcome with friendly hospitality.
Grenada Island, the largest in the family, is a mountainous, volcanic little wonder, where forests of all sorts shift to picturesque mangrove, giving way to white-powder beaches, incredibly blue water, and stunning coral reefs. Its capital, St. George's, is widely reputed to be the loveliest city in the Caribbean, with a horseshoe-shaped harbor and a swarm of red-tiled roofs cascading above.
To the north-east of mainland Grenada, the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique give you a glimpse of a more leisurely pace of life- you'll be in two minds about which one is the more laid-back sister. Watch boat builders at work, try to find another set of footprints on the beach, and learn to appreciate life's simplest pleasures, from freshly caught lobster and a drink enjoyed in a heart-melting scenery to the endearing simplicity of quaint, old-fashioned guest houses.
And there are still the four uninhabited tiny specks that come in the Grenada package to be ventured to by boat. Rumor has it that Ronde can be yours for a mere 70 million dollars. A 2000-acre emerald gem for sale? The only limit to your Grenada experience is your imagination.
