Australia OVERVIEW
OK. It's true that the British exiled thousands of convicts here (and then set them free, alas!), and it's also the truest of truths that it's home to 1500 species of spiders and that each year one or two people are devoured by crocodiles. It's not a lie either that roughly one third of its territory is considered desert and tsunami threats loom over the horizon every now and then. On the other hand, there are those cute-faced kangaroos, eucalyptus-stoned Koalas and feisty Tasmanian Devils alongside the Great Barrier Reef (largest in the world), massive salt lakes and Christmas in the middle of the summer. Weigh up the pros and cons. Are you in? Off we go.
The vast majority of Australians are cramming into the coastal cities, so make any of them your primary destination if you're seeking urban diversions. Take a pub tour in Sydney (stop over to gaze at the masterpiece Sydney Opera House), roam numerous museums in Perth, pay homage at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, cuddle a Koala at Loan Pine Sanctuary in Brisbane, or watch a good game of tennis at Melbourne Park. You must be aware of one fact though: Australians love sport and gambling, so you'd better think twice before you bet your shirt at poker down under or feel the urgent need to proclaim your country's supremacy in the international sport scene.

a massive rock formation listed as World Heritage Site. Don't miss it if you want to fully comprehend the spirit of Australia.
