U.S. Virgin Islands Travel Guide

U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. Virgin Islands OVERVIEW

Twin City, Love City, Rock City, and Small City are, funnily enough, nicknames that the locals use to denote the four major sisters of the US Virgin Islands.

St. Croix has earned its nickname because of it's two major towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted, both sitting on a waterfront, brimming with quaint, jewel-colored buildings and packed with art galleries that offer a curious insight into the island's vibrant culture. Alluring with the fragrance of hibiscus and intriguing with an urban blend of different backgrounds, the island is simply adorable. Hunt down a bargain among French perfumes, china, crystal, and jewelry. Hop to Buck Island for one of the finest dives in the area. Hike the rainforest, roam the Whim Greathouse plantation that breathes the spirit of the past, or just order a cup of sheer delight at Twin City Coffee House and Gallery in Christiansted.

St. John's moniker refers to the island's beckoning promise of sensuous summer romance. Small and dainty, it ignites the ticking bomb of dormant instincts that come to life in the most seductive scenery of pristine beaches, boundless untouched park lands and the buzz of the hummingbird. Do it celebrity style and have your breakfasts served to bed at a secluded seafront villa or go wild at one of the island's campgrounds in the heart of the national park, where the absence of redundant luxuries lets the two of you enjoy your time without being distracted and the proximity of unbridled nature is a pull on the safety pin.

In comparison with its siblings- demure St. Croix and romantic St. John- St. Thomas is an island that truly rocks, and has been dubbed accordingly. A tiny speck of an island but at the same time an outdoor party spot, where nightlife, live music, and all kinds of excitement abound 24/7. During the day, do all things aquatic or let Charlotte Amalie take you back to the Danish heyday when the town was a bustling port of trade; at night watch the island's blinding lights rival star, hit Paradise Point for the Sunset Party on Wednesday, and choose from the myriad options on the remaining days.

Water Island's nickname needs no explanation. The smallest and youngest of all sisters, it does not have taxis, public transportation, gas stations, hotels, shops or a main town, and depends on St. Thomas, located just a half-mile away, for all things necessary, from groceries to mail service. This staggering simplicity means you have a splendid opportunity to get away from it all, picking a residence from among vacation homes, apartments and eco-cabins that dot the hillsides, and taking advantage of the picture-perfect Caribbean settings.

And when you do some limin' with the locals, perhaps they'll impart with you the secrets and nicknames of a dozen remaining tiny sisters that make up the US Virgin Islands- a dizzying archipelago cut out for surfing nirvanas, beach pampering, adventure trips, honeymoon raptures, rum-sprinkled revelries, and laid-back days after.
