Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe OVERVIEW

Not an easy and glossy-brochure destination, Zimbabwe frequently acts as a tourist repellent scaring off potential visitors with its ongoing social and political unrest. Cholera-ridden, with a quarter of the population suffering from HIV and related diseases as well as widespread famine, this southern Africa's country no longer looks at the bright side of life. With the heyday times gone by, Zimbabwe tends to make grim headlines of the power-shared government of President Mugabe and the Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai corrupt regime hit the front page. Add to it the governmental violent program of land redistribution and removal of white farmers, an economy that has already shown its belly up and millions dependent on food aid. It's definitely not where you would think of spending off-trouble laidback vacations. And that's a great pity for behind the bleak data is a country of unequalled natural beauty.

Landlocked in south-central Africa and sandwiched between the Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers, Zimbabwe borders with Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. It is exactly Zambezi that blesses the country with one of premier tourist lures, the world-famed natural wonder of Victoria Falls. If you're one of the most intrepid and daredevil of travelers, this area is THE destination to put your guts to the test with the wildest white water rafting and a 111 meters bungee jump right into the roaring Zambezi Gorge. But head for the Zambezi Valley and you shall find the land delighting not only with adrenaline-powered opportunities. Wildlife flourishes on the hippo-studded shores of Kariba Lake and the grassy elephant kingdom of Hwange National Park, Matopo Hills stun with an extraterrestrial jumble of granite rocks, the Eastern Highlands offer idyllic hiking trails and the ruins of Great Zimbabwe is where you can savor the history of people that goes back thousands of years. A wealth of natural marvels that need visitors to give the impoverished country another chance.
