Mozambique

Mozambique OVERVIEW

After turbulent centuries of invasions, Arabic hegemony and Portuguese colonial rule followed by years of blood-stained guerilla civil war, Mozambique has cherished its independence and peace for some time now. And although its body is ravaged by famine and malaria, making the country rank high in infant mortality and short life expectancy, the nation and its beauty-studded land are often quoted as Africa's rising stars. The grounds are solid.

First there is the country's intriguing historical and cultural heritage definitely counting as one of the biggest lures. Defined by a vibrant blend of African, Arab and Portuguese influences, it provides an invigorating counterbalance for the other, mostly British colonial countries of the Southern Africa region. Mozambique is passionate about life and this positive energy springs from its bustling cities like the capital Maputo seizing the day in friendly espressos sipped in street cafes or frosty ice cubes to go with your lemon-scented caipirinhas. It resounds with the urban marrabenta music whose fast-paced guitar notes once drew the ire of the colonial authorities and accompanied the civil war turmoil. The remnants of the Mediterranean charm live on in the cobbled streets and grand colonial-era buildings on Ilha de Moçambique or the spicy hot "inteiro com piripiri". Add to it the warmth, liveliness and exuberance of Mozambicans and you're sure to break into a smile and indulge in culinary pleasures.

Then comes the land's beauty. The off-the-beaten-path Namuli and Unango mountains test your hiking skills and capacity for breathtaking vistas, the Quirimbas Archipelago pamper with palm shade and a relaxing swoosh and the specatcular Gorongosa National Park gives a one-of-a-kind safari lesson on the furry and feathery fellows. The country boasts a 2500-kilometer coastline of paradisiacal coastal panoramas, the world-renowned Bazaruto Archipelago to point just one, outstanding scuba and snorkel sites for the adventure tourist and a good deal of sense of space and serenity waiting to be savored on any perfect holiday.
