Saint Martin Travel Guide

Saint Martin

Saint Martin OVERVIEW

Dual identity is by all means a bad thing, but when it comes to this delightfully twisted Caribbean island, the only crunch you're going to face is certain confusion about the correct spelling of its name. Known as Sint Maarten to the Dutch, and St-Martin to the French, this sun-kissed speck of land has developed by far the most benign form of schizophrenia, and one you would actually not mind contracting either. While in the majority of cases the rampaging colonialists managed to divide their loot, France and the Netherlands have stuck to Saint Martin like glue for almost 350 years, and haven't the slightest intention of giving up their yards for the neighbor's sake.

Of course, the two have enjoyed peaceful coexistence, and you will find yourself whooshing back and forth without obstacles. However, on either side of the almost imperceptible border running across the Oyster Pond, there flourish two distinct personalities that draw heavily from their roots and transport huge pieces of Europe into the Caribbean setting.

The French tend to retain what they're reputed for: tastefulness, sophistication and elegance. Marigot is garnished with a sizable dollop of luxury resorts, refined restaurants, upscale boutiques with the latest French fashions, and atmospheric cafes smelling of coffee and croissants, all to make you swear you're smack dab in Paris. The Dutch part, though not devoid of great charm, is a lot more bouncier and rather addresses the epicurean pleasures of its visitors, wit its effervescent cruise port, a busy commercial district, and a goodly array of clubs to dance the nights away.

It's not difficult to comprehend why the two insisted on cutting the pie. Perfect weather all year round, gentle emerald waves kissing the bleach-blond sands, a shaded respite of lush green hills, and graceful colonial architecture is something you wouldn't blow the chances of keeping. And if you additionally appreciate high-end duty free shopping, gourmet food, kicking nightlife, Las Vegas style attractions and cosmopolitan flair, you, too, will order a slice for yourself and with all likelihood won't be able to resist a second helping. French finesse and Dutch open-mindedness make it a terribly sexy place, and the hot Caribbean vibe keeps this intriguing body all the more exposed.
