Mauritius

Mauritius OVERVIEW

Invigorated with the sun that never fails to rise over Pointe-aux-Piments, dazzled with the emerald blues of paradisaical lagoons and intoxicated with sugar can rum, you get carried away with the tantalizing beats of

moutia

(hand drum). A group of amazingly shaped, flower-clad dancers sway to the sound of

sega

music piercing the darkness. Gentle bonfire glow illuminates the tourists' blissful faces and there's no end to fancy drinks served along tropical fruit refreshments. Just picture that. It ain't no dream. It's Mauritius. Even better, you wake up and discover to your utmost relief that there's no morning-after blues you're so very used to back home. You jump out of bed and the adventure kicks off anew.

For Mauritius is not all about divine beaches and cracking parties. As the most popular and developed one of the Mascarene archipelago, it keeps you busy with outdoor activities ranging from the urban delights of colonial-era Port Louis to a spine-tingling attraction of the Casela Nature & Leisure Park where you are welcome to have a walk with a baby lion or cheetah side by side. It's up to you which one. Of course, the thrilling sensations of the latter are brought to you by a more than experienced staff and some would say that you're more likely to suffer injury in the capital after dark. Assured on that front, we still have some doubts if the poor little kitties should be vexed with our unbridled need for having adrenaline push us to new heights. On the other hand, we can imagine the compelling softness of their fur and somehow rest our case. The choice is yours again.

Apart from that, there's the magnificent Le Morne Peninsula offering a touch of coastal luxury and heavenly dining under the stars. You should also consider Black River Gorges National Park protecting much of the remaining indigenous forests tailored for unforgettable hiking. But most importantly, don't miss the village of Chamarel and its two natural wonders- a fabulous waterfall plummeting hundreds of feet down the cliff and the Colored Earths playing tricks on your sense of vision.

Some say it's overrated. We say: "Would handle it somehow".
