Saint Lucia OVERVIEW
Some say its shape resembles an avocado, others tend to opt for a mango. Whatever fruit St Lucia looks like, it is ripe, juicy and bound to please your palate. A gem with volcanic origin, refined by the raging Atlantic and smoothed out by the gentle Caribbean sea, it is not yet another picturesque island that can be thrown into one sack with a West Indies label. It is a world apart that enchants with beauty of the exotic- that's for sure- but also stimulates your senses with the unfamiliar, the undiscovered, and the unspoiled.
Its dramatic twin peaks, the Pitons, rise from the depths and soar 2,000 feet up, sheltering magical rain forests where wild orchids and giant ferns abound along numerous endangered species that can be sighted up close. Vast orchards of banana, coconut, and papaya trees break into the wilderness making for an irresistible melange of colors and smells that permeate the mountainous interior. The island's steep coastline hides the prettiest of beaches, the one at Marigot Bay being the most eminent example, created as if for the needs of the movie industry and photographed so eagerly that first time tourists often get a jolt of recognition.
Far from being conceited, St Lucians take great pride in their little paradise and are happy to share it with those who know how to appreciate the gifts of nature. They have earned a reputation for their sincere warmth and charm that tourists experience no matter where they go, be it the bustling Castries market, the lovely Ti Kaye village, or the sleepy fishing port of Soufrière (not to be missed for the sake of the world's only drive-in volcanic crater.
St Lucia is equally good for a romantic honeymoon, a solitary hike, and a family holiday, but except for traditional Caribbean pursuits on stock, you get a pulse nowhere else to be felt and a sense of romanticism nowhere else to be experienced.
