Egypt OVERVIEW
When 17-year old Cleopatra married her younger brother and mounted the imperial throne, little did she know that in 10 years' time the world would fall at her feet, along with Marcus Aurelius and Julius Caesar as her most prominent admirers. Her invincible power still intimidates many a die-hard male chauvinist and her legend spices up the already appetizing touristic tidbit.
6000 years of history blooming along the banks of the treacherous but life-giving Nile makes Egypt a cradle of highly developed civilization and a mystique destination, with remnants of the past proudly manifesting their big time splendor around every corner. To start with, there's the majestic Sphinx watching over Giza and its pyramid-rugged skyline, thrilling tombs of almighty pharaohs waiting to be explored in Luxor, stretches of hieroglyphic inscriptions at every head turn, and minarets towering over Cairo. And all this is but the tip of what the sand-spangled country entices with. In fact, these images are so widely-recognized that an average person may ceaselessly ramble about the ancient Egypt but is rather unlikely to know much about the Egypt of today.
If monuments are not your cup of tea and you hardly have an explorer streak, the glamorous sun-drenched resorts and impressive hotel base won't leave you disappointed. Try snorkeling and discover the underwater realm of garden-like reef in Hurghada, take part in top sailing regattas in Sharm-el-Sheikh, or take your luck and get a sizable dromedary moving across the solitary stretches of the Sahara.
