Cayman Islands OVERVIEW
Cheeseburger Reef. Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman are diving the shallow west coast site among some of the most vibrant colors found. No, they're not on holiday. Grisham's "The Firm" is just being shot on the Cayman Islands, and God knows what better location they could find for a plot revolving around finding tax havens for Texans who'd rather pay a lawyer than the IRS.
The Caymans is not just a family of bloodthirsty reptiles but also a group of Caribbean Islands, so flat that one has to struggle to notice them from the sea level. Add to it a circle of thick, hardly navigable coral, and you've got a perfect shelter for pirate gangs, who are, by the way, widely held to have left a considerable treasure buried deep down in the labyrinthine network of passages near Bodden Town. Sadly enough, although the caves can be entered, the chests you will find there- we're afraid- only seem to be filled with priceless loots, but the fact that a mere 262 kilometer square territory is home to well over 500 banks is too flabbergasting and suggestive to be considered incidental.
The three tiny islands are de facto the British Overseas Territory but it immediately becomes as obvious as ABC that the sisters and their royal mother are simply worlds apart. And although the fervent business life, shopping plazas, and all modern conveniences of George Town may actually give a feel of Grand Cayman being a central European financial district, its enough to step on the Seven Mile Beach, with sand stretching as far as the eyes can see, or hop to the world renowned Cayman Turtle Farm for the impression to melt away within seconds.
If you want to get away from it all with no strings attached, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac will do the trick. Their quiet charm, picture-perfect scenery, fantastic walking trails and awesome opportunities for all that's aquatic compensate for the lack of bustling urban hubs and dramatic settings. And if you measure the quality of holiday time by how long you can go without lifting a finger, there's always a hammock stretched somewhere between the palm trees and someone to fix you a bottle of cold Caybrew with the most beaming of smiles.
