Iran Travel Guide

Iran

Iran OVERVIEW

Under no circumstances display affection or even touch members of the opposite sex in public. Never initiate political discussions. Wrap yourself top to toe before entering holy sites. Don't raise your thumb up and never ever take pictures without permission. The list goes on but this is enough to bring about images of public flogging and push foreign visitors into choosing a more "civilized" destination. Iran has some really bad press, and believe it or not, it's not exactly deserved.

In fact, Iranians are an exceptionally warm lot and will most probably turn a blind eye to even some major breaches of protocol (which doesn't mean you're not obliged, as a thoughtful traveler, to brush up on the Arabic code of conduct). If you show them respect, they'll introduce you to the long-standing Persian civilization, two and a half millennia of inspiring literature, stunning architecture, magnificent live customs, and their welcoming homes.

Tehran is all you probably believe it is not- ultramodern, hip, brimming with things to see and do; let alone Dizin, an exquisite skiing spot, is just a two-hour drive from the capital. Shoppers whiz to Kish Island, a consumer's haven with a free trade zone awaiting and history hounds take their time at Susa to have a close look at the epitomes of Iran's ancient splendor. The Imam Reza shrine at Mashhad will long stay in your memory if you see it by night and the unbelievable, lunar quality of Kaluts will forever keep you marveling at how ingenious an artist wind can be. But no matter what defines you interest, don't miss Persepolis. Your shoes will get a little dusted but the staggering historical load you'll be faced with is worth the extra polishing.

Iran is a feast of colors, smells, and sounds. Dazzling carpets unfold abut impressive blue mosques, the fragrance of rice mixes with the opulent kebab aroma, and the soulful classical tunes accompany traditional folk rhythms sending you into the dreamlike realm of Scheherazade's stories, so fabulous and engrossing that you'll want to stay awake for as long as possible.
