Taiwan OVERVIEW
The M.I.T (Made in Taiwan) stereotype pervades and does the country a complete disservice, perpetuating misconceptions of dullness, mediocrity, repetitiveness and kitsch as the only qualities the industrious nation is capable of coming up with. Meanwhile, Taiwan is a box of multi-flavored chocolates better than you bargained for.
Just take your pick between the minty slopes of the mountainous heaven outside Wulai and the bluish torrents of Taroko National Park if hiking is your thing; choose Taipei or Kaohsiung for a touch of an ultramodern metropolis with galore shopping, dining, and entertainment; and see how long you are able to stay put before the magnetic beauty of Taiwan's outer islands lures you to its remote hideaways. Or better still, sweep the board and get a taste of them all.
To arrive in Taiwan is to enter a world where the second highest skyscraper pierces the clouds over Taipei and more than 5000 lavish temples fill with the murmur of worship; where the round bellies of golden Buddha figures shine like the polished surfaces of Taiwanese cutting-edge technological gadgets, and where Confucius competes with Eminem for primacy in blazing teenagers' cognitive trails. Taiwan is as big as your imagination, and certainly anything but dull.
Sure, it has hot issues with China regarding territory and independence, but the conflict has been on for so long that it flares up and dies down naturally on a regular basis, and as long as the PRC holds back its policy to use force if reunification is impossible through diplomatic means, you're absolutely safe to penetrate the length and breadth of the island day 'n' nite. So, don't waste time, and start planning your M.I.T holiday right now.
