If only I could speak...what is that, Spanish, Italian, Japanese..? We all know this terrible feeling while traveling when we want to communicate with the locals, but no one speaks our language, and we don't really speak theirs. Apparently, NEC, a high-tech company, comes up with a solution. Tele Scouter Translation Glasses is a smart device that breaks the language barrier and keeps the conversation flowing.
Tele Scouter looks like an eyeglass frame that is comprised of a tiny retinal display and microphone. The microphone transmits the conversation to a small computer and then converts it into text at the same time translating the speech.
Almost real-time translation is projected onto the user's retina, so people wearing the glasses will have "subtitles' provided during their conversation. According to NEC, users can also see the conversation partner as the text is displayed on part of the retina and it does not cause eye strain, even if operating for many hours.
The device can also be very useful for workers such as technicians or engineers, as it can provide hands-free instructions, diagrams and other types of data.
