Maldives OVERVIEW
The Big Blue
(seen it?) was shot in Greece but we bet our lives Luc Besson was thinking of the Maldives when he was coming up with the title. Less than one percent land and over 99 percent sea. Twenty-six atolls encompassing a thousand ‘Robinson Crusoe' coral islands, fabulous lagoons and infinite shades of turquoise. Go figure. And should it be far beyond your grasp, just imagine a string of pearls scattered over a sheet of light blue silk. If there is paradise, this is what we hope it looks like. And even if it takes giving up unbridled partying to be admitted, we are ready to carry the burden of sacrifice.
The profusion of mind-blowing colors, excellent visibility and professional, multi-lingual instructors at your beck and call make the islands a mecca for divers, surfers, and snorkelers. If you're in two minds about where to stay, our hint is the Diva Hotel in the Ari atoll. Still rolling out some of its world-class services, it features not only five-star villas floating offshore but also a wide variety of dining venues. Get into the mood in the barefoot style Iru Bar, standing on stilts over the water and facing the sunset, before you hit the dance floor and hip-shake till the crack of dawn. Then flatten yourselves out on sand, soak up sun and recharge batteries to be poised for sightseeing by early afternoon. Among attractions worth your while you should allocate a good deal of time to Male'. The capital's rugged, modern skyline presides over bustling streets and uncompromising Muslim character, of which the epitome is the stunning Islamic Center. History buffs will delight in the remnants of Maldivian Buddhist era excavated on the island of Isdhoo, and culture seekers can have a first-hand experience of the local ways on Dhangethi Island.
Simplicity and no restraints. It is places such as the Maldives that make you feel like striping off your inhibitions and wrapping yourselves with palm leaf skirts. With the city frenzy left far behind and hi-tech brought down to a necessary minimum, it's easy to get in touch with your primeval natures and transform them to their higher potential.
